Cronos Blockchain Halted After $66M-$75M Tectonic Lending Protocol Exploit
The Cronos blockchain halted block production on August 30 after an attacker exploited the Tectonic lending protocol, draining between $66 million and $75 million from the platform. The attack involved manipulating the price of Tectonic's governance token, TONIC, to inflate its value by about 100 times within 20 minutes.
The attacker used this artificially inflated token as collateral to borrow assets fraudulently. Around $6 million of the stolen funds were transferred to Ethereum before the halt, while most remain on Cronos. Crypto.com's centralized exchange and app were unaffected by the incident.
There is currently no timeline for network restart, recovery, or user compensation announced by the team. The incident highlights risks in DeFi protocols that use weak collateral valuation methods.
