Cronos Blockchain Halted Following $66M Tectonic Lending Exploit
The Cronos blockchain has been halted following a massive exploit of the Tectonic lending protocol. On August 30, 2026, an attacker manipulated the price of Tectonic's governance token and used it as inflated collateral to borrow assets, draining between $66 million and $75 million from the network.
The attacker also moved about $6 million off-chain before validators halted the network to prevent further losses. However, this move came at a cost: all other transactions on Cronos have been frozen until the issue is resolved.
Investigations are ongoing, and a full post-mortem is pending. The incident highlights risks in DeFi lending protocols relying on thinly traded collateral and raises questions about the trade-offs of blockchains that can be halted by validator consensus.
