Cronos Halts Blockchain Amid $75M Tectonic Exploit
Cronos, a blockchain network, halted its operations on August 30 after an exploit targeting lending protocol Tectonic drained approximately $75 million. Most of the stolen funds remained on the network at the time.
The attack exploited Tectonic's 20% collateral factor and low liquidity, according to Weilin Li, an independent researcher who estimated the losses. The attacker artificially inflated the governance token's price by 100-fold in under 20 minutes, then used that inflated collateral to borrow other assets from the protocol.
Tectonic issued a warning telling users not to interact with the protocol, while Cronos announced the suspension on social media and said it would provide updates as its investigation continued. Neither team confirmed the root cause or an official loss figure, nor did they provide a restart timeline.
