Cronos Validators Rewind Chain by 10,000 Blocks to Contain $75 Million Hack
The Cronos blockchain was hacked for $75 million in August 2026, but its validators took an extraordinary step to contain the damage. They halted block production, agreed to discard more than 10,000 blocks of canonical history, and restarted the chain from a snapshot taken before the attack.
This decision erased all transactions that occurred during those erased blocks, including legitimate trades and contract deployments. The attackers had managed to bridge approximately $6 million to Ethereum, where Cronos validators have no authority. The remaining $69 million sat at identified Cronos addresses, frozen but technically still in the attacker's control.
Kris Marszalek, CEO of Crypto.com, assured that all funds held through the exchange and app were safe, but this referred specifically to assets held through centralized services, not those deposited in Tectonic. A failure in one does not necessarily compromise the other.
