Crypto API Free Tiers: Key Differences and Limitations
The crypto industry offers several free APIs for developers and automated trading, but their terms and limitations vary significantly.
CoinPaprika provides the largest publicly documented free allowance at 20,000 monthly API calls, but its published terms restrict this tier to personal use only. CoinMarketCap offers 15,000 monthly credits across more than 60 endpoints, including commercial rights for a single product serving up to 100,000 individual users on its free basic plan.
CoinGecko allows 10,000 monthly calls at 100 requests per minute and charges a flat single credit per request. Exchange-native endpoints from Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken serve public market data freely without requiring an API key, but are limited to that venue's own order books and listed trading pairs.
The choice of free crypto API for production workloads depends on commercial licensing, update frequency, and rate limits. CoinMarketCap's basic plan explicitly permits one commercial product serving up to 100,000 users, while CoinPaprika's free tier excludes commercial use entirely.
