Crypto ATM Scams Devastate Treasure Valley Residents
Treasure Valley leaders are sounding the alarm on a growing threat to residents: cryptocurrency ATM scams. These scams have already cost residents over $1 million this year alone, with the largest losses coming from Meridian, where 30 residents lost a combined $1.3 million between January and July.
Scammers often target seniors, with about half of the victims being over 60 years old. The scammers pose as law enforcement, claiming there's a warrant for the victim's arrest and that they can resolve the issue by depositing cash into a cryptocurrency ATM. They may even stay on the phone with the victim throughout the transaction, using fear and urgency to keep them from questioning what they're being told.
Law enforcement officials are urging residents to be cautious and not to fall prey to these scams. 'This is a scam. Law enforcement will never call and demand money to clear a warrant, and officers will never send you to a cryptocurrency ATM,' said Eagle Mayor Brad Pike.
The city of Kuna is considering banning cryptocurrency ATMs in city limits, and the city of Star has already approved an ordinance to do so. The goal is to protect residents from these scams, which can be devastating to families and are often difficult to recover from once the money is lost.
