Crypto Billionaires Break Records with £72 Million Donation to Farage's Party
Crypto moguls Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne have made record-breaking donations to Nigel Farage's Reform UK party, contributing £72 million in a 24-hour period. This is the largest individual donation in British history.
Delo, co-founder of BitMEX, and Harborne, who has investments in Bitfinex and Tether, each donated £36 million on consecutive days. Their contributions come amid growing concerns about cryptocurrency industry influence in UK politics.
The donations have sparked a debate over the need for regulation, with government proposals to prohibit cryptocurrency-based political donations. The proposal includes an outright ban on digital currency contributions and a £100,000 annual ceiling on overseas donations.
Farage has cultivated relationships within the cryptocurrency sector, but his party's ties to the industry are under scrutiny. The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into allegations surrounding Reform's fundraising practices, and a parliamentary standards committee is examining a £5 million personal transfer from Harborne to Farage.
