Crypto Billionaires Flood Midterm Elections with Record Corporate Spending

Share

A new class of billionaires from crypto companies, artificial intelligence firms, and online betting industries is transforming the US midterm elections, driving record corporate spending and influencing regulatory policies.

Crypto companies have spent at least $294 million on midterm races through the first quarter of this year, with a significant portion going towards super PACs, affiliate PACs, and dark money nonprofits that don't disclose their donors. This approach was pioneered by the crypto industry in the last election cycle and is being copied now by Big Tech, sports betting, and other industries.

Executives like Elon Musk have directly spent millions more on elections, with plans to spend far more by November. Google co-founder Sergey Brin has also made significant contributions, spending over $106 million in California fighting a proposed wealth tax among other state issues. Meta, which operates Facebook and Instagram, has donated $65 million to four different super PACs.

Critics argue that this corporate spending risks amplifying the influence of niche interests and allowing regulatory policy problems related to crypto, AI, and online gaming to dominate the political discourse. However, supporters say it gives emerging sectors a voice other corporate interests have long enjoyed.
