Crypto Billionaires Fuel Reform UK's Rise with £72M Donation
Crypto billionaires Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne have donated a combined £72 million ($97 million) to Reform UK, an anti-immigration party led by Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage. The donations are tied for the largest ever received by a U.K. political party.
Delo, a co-founder of BitMEX, gave £36 million ($48 million), while Harborne matched this amount on Saturday. Delo claimed he was donating to help 'break up the cartel' that controls British politics, referring to the Labour and Conservative parties.
The donations have sparked concerns about money in politics. The Liberal Democrats called for Prime Minister Andy Burnham to cap donations and protect British democracy, saying Farage is trying to buy his way into power.
