The third quarter of 2026 saw a surge in cryptocurrency security breaches, totaling $1.26 billion across 247 separate events. This represents a significant 53.9% increase compared to Q2's $819.4 million in damages.
September emerged as the most damaging month of 2026 so far, with cybercriminals extracting $768.5 million through 99 distinct attacks. The Bitget platform breach dominated third-quarter damages, with perpetrators successfully extracting $387.5 million from the trading platform.
The Liquid Network platform experienced a $319 million compromise on September 6, while Tectonic sustained $120 million in losses and Coldcard reported a $112.7 million theft. Despite these security challenges, Bitcoin demonstrated resilience throughout the quarter, concluding Q3 with a 40% price increase.
