Crypto businessman Adam Iza sentenced for corrupting sheriff's deputies
Adam Iza, a 26-year-old self-proclaimed cryptocurrency businessman, was sentenced to over six years in prison for orchestrating a fraud scheme, tax evasion, and corrupting Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies. Iza admitted to generating tens of millions of dollars through illegal activities, concealing millions from the IRS, and using his wealth to employ and corrupt law enforcement officers. The sentence will run concurrently with a 15-year term he is already serving for a separate case involving an attempted Bitcoin robbery and kidnapping in Connecticut.
U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson highlighted Iza's manipulation of law enforcement relationships to further his personal and financial interests. Iza, who grew up in poverty in Iraq and later built a lucrative cryptocurrency trading platform called Zort, pleaded guilty to conspiracy against rights, wire fraud, and tax evasion. At least five former sheriff's deputies involved in the case have also been sentenced to prison.
As part of his plea agreement, Iza agreed to forfeit luxury items, including two Mercedes-Benzes, a Ferrari, and dozens of high-end handbags. He also surrendered a Jacob & Co. 'Godfather' watch and three 'Godfather' sculptures. During the sentencing, Iza expressed remorse, stating he took 'full responsibility' for his actions. Judge Anderson ordered Iza to pay over $23 million in restitution to the IRS, along with smaller amounts to specific victims.
Prosecutors detailed how Iza used deputies to intimidate and threaten victims, including one instance where deputies unholstered firearms to extort $25,000. In another case, Iza held a victim at gunpoint and forced the transfer of $127,000. The plea agreement also revealed attempts to obtain a laptop containing a large amount of cryptocurrency through threats and violence.
