Crypto Caution: Expert Warns Small Businesses to Slow Down on Cryptocurrency Adoption
Andrew Wu, an associate professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, testified before the U.S. House Committee on Small Business on September 15 about the impact of cryptocurrency on small businesses. Wu argued that while the technology behind cryptocurrency holds promise, small businesses should be cautious before adopting it.
Wu noted that the GENIUS Act, which passed last year, regulates stablecoins but leaves many questions unanswered. He emphasized that small businesses need to consider the potential risks and costs of using cryptocurrency, including the lack of reversibility in payments and the need for institutional support. Wu recommended that small business owners ask five key questions before adopting cryptocurrency: which digital asset to use, who else must use it, what it really costs, whether it beats alternatives, and what happens when something goes wrong.
Wu's testimony came as the CLARITY Act, which would define broader regulations for the cryptocurrency market, failed to pass just hours later. Wu stated that more work is needed to develop clear rules and policies for cryptocurrency, and that small businesses should not rush into adopting it without careful consideration.
