Crypto Chains Reveal Their True Purpose in Token Breakdown
The cryptocurrency landscape is dominated by narratives and claims made by each chain's developers. However, it's not always what chains are designed for that determines their actual use case. The tokens that carry the most value on a chain reveal its true nature.
A study by CryptoRank analyzed the top-50 tokens by market cap on seven major chains, excluding wrapped tokens like WETH and WBTC. This breakdown gives each chain a clear signature, with some leaning towards speculation and others towards money movement and infrastructure.
Robinhood Chain stands out as a prime example of this phenomenon. With more than half of its top-50 tokens being memecoins, it's clear that the network has become a hub for speculative trading rather than tokenized real-world assets. Memecoins offer faster turnover, lower barriers to entry, and stronger social-media pull compared to tokenized stocks.
Solana, despite its meme reputation, is led by stablecoins (28%) and DeFi (22%), with memes at just 10%. BNB Chain splits its top evenly between DeFi and stablecoins at 24% each. Base and Polygon tilt further towards DeFi (26% and 24%), though stablecoins still hold a sizable share of each.
Ethereum, on the other hand, stands apart with its largest category being Blockchain (28%). This is because most major EVM chains and L2s issue their own token, which lives on Ethereum. Stablecoins (24%) and DeFi (20%) fill out the rest, fitting its role as the base settlement layer for the ecosystem.
