Crypto Consultant Accused of Stealing $55M in Digital Assets
A Maryland cybersecurity consultant, Jonathan Spalletta, is on trial for allegedly stealing $54.7 million in cryptocurrency from a decentralized finance platform called Uranium Finance.
The attacks occurred in April 2021, with the second and more significant breach happening on April 28, draining $53.3 million from the platform's liquidity pools. The platform was forced to shut down due to the severity of the losses.
Prosecutors argue that Spalletta exploited vulnerabilities in Uranium Finance's systems to carry out the hacks, but his defense team is contesting whether the government can prove he was directly involved.
In addition to the digital assets, authorities claim Spalletta used some of the stolen funds to purchase luxury items, including a Black Lotus card from Magic: The Gathering worth $500,000 and a Roman coin commemorating Julius Caesar's assassination valued at over $601,500. These purchases totalled more than $1 million in physical goods.
