Crypto Economy Shrugs Off Market Cap Rout with Surprisingly Small Contraction
The global cryptocurrency economy showed remarkable resilience in the face of a $2.1 trillion market cap rout, contracting by only 1.6% over the past 12 months, according to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis.
The decline was relatively small compared to the massive drop in total capitalization, which fell 50%. Measured crypto economic activity decreased by around $100 billion, from $9.5 trillion to $9.4 trillion, between June 2025 and June 2026.
Stablecoins outperformed other cryptocurrencies during this period, maintaining their value despite the market downturn. Their on-chain balances remained steady at between $98 billion and $109 billion, whereas global on-chain balances fell from $860 billion in September 2025 to $440 billion in June 2026.
