Crypto exchanges are rushing to strengthen their security measures following a massive $6.3 billion hack on Binance, the world's largest exchange. The breach, which occurred on Thursday and was blamed on North Korea, has prompted other platforms like Coinbase and Kraken to review their own defenses. Coinbase adjusted its systems to store cryptocurrency keys offline as a precaution, while Kraken said it was monitoring industry incidents for potential lessons.

Analysts and industry executives warn that the timing of the attack is critical, as President Donald Trump's regulators are pushing for deeper integration of digital assets into the financial system. Chris Perkins, Franklin Templeton's head of crypto, emphasized that the security situation must be addressed immediately for the industry to reach its full potential.

Binance halted withdrawals after the attack and plans to cover the losses using company funds. The company's co-CEO, Richard Teng, revealed that the breach may have started with a compromised software engineer’s laptop, giving hackers access to withdrawal systems. Additional breaches were later discovered, and software designed to erase traces of the attack complicated the investigation.

Despite the record heist, executives expressed confidence that Binance has sufficient resources to cover the losses and that the hack would not have broader financial repercussions. Bitcoin and ether prices initially dropped but recovered some ground on Friday. Josh Riezman, chief legal and strategy officer at crypto firm GSR, noted that the industry as a whole is not expected to suffer material losses.
