Crypto Extortion Success Rates Plummet as Attackers Get Sloppier
A recent Chainalysis report reveals that successful crypto extortions have plummeted to just 26% in 2026, down from 67% in 2024 and 49% in 2025. This trend is attributed to attackers becoming increasingly sloppy, with a higher number of attempts but lower success rates.
The majority of these attacks are occurring in France, where the country has seen a significant spike in violent theft attempts, with 30 documented incidents in the first half of 2026 alone. The total value of attempted or partially mitigated crypto thefts in 2026 stands at roughly $107 million, with over $30 million already stolen.
Chainalysis attributes this surge to the aftermath of a 2024 breach of tax agency records that exposed the identities and holdings of crypto investors across France. This opportunism has led to a shift toward less elaborate operations, with home invasions rising to 37% of all incidents in 2026.
