Crypto Firms Unite to Standardize Quantum-Resistant Blockchain Security

A coalition of crypto firms has launched the Quantum Alliance, an initiative aimed at standardizing what it means for a blockchain to be quantum-resistant. The group, which includes nine organizations like Quantus, Postquant Labs, and Keystone, seeks to establish criteria for evaluating quantum-resistance claims and compatibility rules for networks transitioning to new cryptography.

The Alliance will operate through four working groups focused on blockchain migration, post-quantum zero-knowledge systems, wallet security, and cross-chain compatibility. Its approach prioritizes public evidence and working implementations over corporate influence, modeling itself after the Internet Engineering Task Force. Quantus founder Christopher Smith emphasized the eventual normalization of post-quantum cryptography, suggesting current methods will become obsolete.

The urgency stems from the lack of a standardized definition for 'quantum-ready' and the potential risks of quantum computers exploiting vulnerabilities in blockchain cryptography. Approximately 6.04 million BTC, or 30% of the supply, are currently exposed to quantum threats. Recent forecasts, including one co-built by Alliance contributors, predict that quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin's cryptography could emerge as early as March 2028.

The initiative comes amid growing industry concern over quantum threats. Coinbase has urged Bitcoin developers to begin migrating to quantum-resistant systems immediately, warning that preparations could take years. Additionally, a consortium involving BlackRock, Strategy, and Coinbase has allocated $15 million to address the issue, highlighting the broader effort to mitigate this emerging risk.
