Crypto Fraud Evolution: How Token Recovery Is Staying Ahead
Token Recovery, a company specializing in digital-asset investigations and forensic analysis, has been at the forefront of uncovering crypto fraud. Recently, they were involved in an investigation into Tommy Robinson's cryptocurrency donations, where they found that funds moved from a donation address to an intermediary address before reaching addresses linked to online gambling services.
The company's Head of Token Recovery, Scott Pounder, explained how blockchain forensics can provide a detailed trail of transactions but often require combining with open-source intelligence (OSINT) to establish context and attribution. In the Tommy Robinson case, they used OSINT to bridge the gap between on-chain transactions and off-chain research.
Pounder highlighted that crypto fraud is becoming more professionalized, with AI-enabled scams, cross-chain movement, and human manipulation creating new challenges for investigators. He noted that while blockchain technology itself is not the weak point, it's often the person or process associated with it that's vulnerable to exploitation.
Token Recovery has expanded its services to address these developments, offering advanced cross-chain tracing, OSINT, source and destination-of-funds analysis, wallet monitoring, fraud investigations, compliance support, and court-ready reporting. Pounder emphasized the importance of slowing down transactions, protecting credentials, verifying counterparties, and maintaining strong organizational security controls to prevent digital currency fraud.
