Faisa Ali, a 34-year-old from Nottingham, has been handed a suspended prison sentence after defrauding investors out of thousands of pounds for her cryptocurrency company. Between 2021 and 2023, Ali promised investors their money was safe, but she ultimately lost all their funds. In March 2023, she admitted to making poor decisions in a text message to the investor WhatsApp group.
Nottingham Crown Court sentenced Ali to a three-year prison term, suspended for three years, and ordered her to complete 300 hours of unpaid work. The fraud primarily targeted members of the Somali community across the UK, with 23 victims providing witness statements. One victim lost over £40,000.
Bank records revealed Ali spent nearly £250,000 on luxury items, including £76,140 on jewellery, £40,845 on travel, £65,183 on home improvements, £41,625 on vehicles, and £24,030 on fast food. Despite knowing the value of cryptocurrencies had plummeted, she continued to use new investors' money to fund her lavish lifestyle.
Detective Constable Simon Jones described Ali as a 'calculating fraudster' who exploited the trust of vulnerable individuals. Many victims had saved for years, only to lose everything. A future proceeds of crime hearing may force Ali to forfeit her remaining assets.
