The cryptocurrency sector saw a significant spike in security incidents in August 2026, with 50 notable hacks reported, a 67% increase from July's 30. Despite this rise in attacks, total losses decreased by 49.5% to $136.3 million compared to the previous month's $270 million.

The bulk of these losses were attributed to the TectonicFi incident, which resulted in over half of August's total stolen funds at around $74 million. PeckShieldAlert ranked this incident as the fourth largest cryptocurrency theft of 2026 so far.

According to PeckShield, the attacker had trouble transferring the majority of pilfered assets and was only able to move about $6 million before Cronos paused its chain.
