Crypto Hacking Incidents Reach Record High in August as Losses Plummet
Crypto hacking incidents surged in August 2026, setting a new record for monthly hacks. According to data from blockchain security firm PeckShield, there were 50 major hacks last month, up from July's 30 and surpassing April, May, and June's counts of 40.
The total losses fell to $136.3 million, down 49.5% from July's $270 million. The average loss per hack dropped to around $2.7 million, a significant decrease from July's $9 million.
The largest exploit occurred at Tectonic, the largest lending protocol on Cronos (CRO), which lost roughly $74 million. However, the attacker only managed to move about $6 million to Ethereum (ETH) before validators froze the network.
PeckShield noted that the exploiter has since started laundering the stolen funds, bridging them to #BTC (~200K so far).
