Crypto Hacks Continue to Plague Industry with $11.9 Billion Stolen
Crypto hacks have continued at a steady pace over the past two years, despite losses becoming more concentrated among catastrophic breaches. Immunefi's report examined 425 publicly disclosed incidents between 2021 and 2025, revealing a combined total of $11.9 billion stolen. The average hack now costs a targeted project around $25 million in stolen funds, while the median loss has dropped to approximately $2.2 million.
Centralized exchanges were disproportionately affected, with twenty exchange hacks producing around $2.55 billion in losses, or about 55% of the two-year total. Token prices also plummeted after attacks, with a median decline of 61% within six months of a breach.
Immunefi CEO Mitchell Amador noted that the financial fallout extends beyond the initial theft, with sustained token price suppression, reduced treasury capacity, and leadership disruption often following.
