Crypto Hacks Hit Record $768M in September: Worst Month of 2026
Crypto hacks and exploits in September reached $768 million, marking the worst month of 2026 according to security firms CertiK and PeckShield. The total loss was driven mainly by two large breaches at the exchange Bitget and the Liquid Network.
The largest single incident hit Bitget on Sept. 24, with a flaw in a third-party security product allowing attackers to obtain high-level internal credentials and issue fraudulent withdrawal commands. The exchange's private keys were not compromised, but its cold storage wallets were unaffected, said CEO Gracy Chen.
The second-largest incident struck the Liquid Network on Sept. 6, with attackers withdrawing roughly 4,000 BTC worth about $320 million from the network's federation wallet. However, purported white-hat hackers later returned 3,400 BTC, leaving approximately 598 BTC outstanding.
