Crypto Hacks Soar 67% in August, Total Losses at $136M
The cryptocurrency industry experienced a significant surge in security incidents in August 2026, according to data from PeckShieldAlert. A total of 50 major hacks occurred during this period, representing a 67% increase from July's 30 hacks. Despite the rise in attacks, the total losses were lower than expected, amounting to approximately $136.3 million.
The largest incident was TectonicFi, which lost about $74 million, accounting for more than half of all money stolen during the month. This incident ranked fourth on PeckShield's list of the biggest cryptocurrency thefts in 2026 so far. However, the attacker struggled to transfer most of the pilfered assets, with only around $6 million reportedly bridged away before Cronos paused its chain.
Other notable incidents include Termlabs losing $8.5 million, Coinsbuy losing $7.9 million, and TAC losing $7.5 million. MANTRA lost $3.6 million, Injective recorded losses of about $4.8 million, and BounceBit, Cosmos Labs, and Aquifer each suffered losses ranging from $2.47 to $3 million.
This August shows that decreasing dollar losses should not be confused with improved crypto security, as $136.3 million was stolen in 50 incidents. Although there were more attacks on the industry, the overall damage was not as high as it was in the previous month.
