Crypto Hacks Soar Past $768M in September
Crypto suffered its worst month of the year for hacks and exploits in September, with significant losses estimated at over $768 million. Two blockchain security firms, PeckShield and CertiK, reported major incidents resulting in stolen funds, with CertiK recording 97 incidents and estimating losses at $768.4 million. This represents a substantial increase from August's losses.
The Bitget hack was one of the largest incidents, with estimated losses of over $388 million. However, more than $270 million was later returned. Other notable hacks included those targeting Safe Wallet, DCENT, and Duelbits, which lost $7.8 million, $6 million, and $5.9 million, respectively.
CertiK's security dashboard shows a total of 656 security incidents in 2026, marking a total loss of $2.68 billion. The firm stated that September was 'a stark reminder of how quickly the threat landscape can shift'.
