Crypto Hacks Surge in September, Exceeding $766 Million
The month of September saw a significant spike in cryptocurrency hacks and exploits, resulting in losses of over $766 million. This makes it the worst month of 2026 so far for stolen funds.
Two blockchain security firms, PeckShield and CertiK, tracked the losses, with totals differing by less than $2 million. According to CertiK, the largest single incident was the $388 million Bitget hack, followed closely by the $320 million Liquid Network exploit.
The combined total of these two attacks accounted for about half of the month's total losses. However, reports indicate that over $270 million from the Liquid Network exploit was later returned, reducing the net losses to roughly $500 million based on CertiK's estimate.
CertiK's security dashboard shows a total of 656 security incidents in 2026 so far, with total losses reaching $2.68 billion. September's losses make up more than a quarter of that yearly total.
