Crypto Holders Face Unexpected Tax Bills When Leaving Their Country of Residence

Crypto holders in Canada, Australia, and some other countries face an unexpected tax bill when they leave their country of residence.

This is because both countries treat leaving as a taxable event for residents holding appreciated assets, calculating gains at the day's market price whether or not any coins are sold.

CryptoSlate spoke with Jeremy Savory, CEO of relocation firm Millionaire Migrant, who said his clients in these countries now want to move before an expected Bitcoin rally, well before they decide to sell their assets.

Savory explained that 'the planning question has moved from where to when', and that automatic exchange sends transaction data to the jurisdiction where a holder is officially considered tax resident.

The OECD says 76 jurisdictions have committed to the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), with the first wave collecting domestic data since January 1, and cross-border exchanges beginning in 2027. The UK's crypto providers started gathering user tax-residence and transaction information on the same date.

Cyprus has introduced a flat 8% tax on crypto disposal gains at the start of 2026, trading an informal zero for an explicit statutory rate. Meanwhile, Türkiye created a 20-year exemption for qualifying foreign-source income and gains for new residents, but this is not necessarily attractive to wealthy crypto holders.

The US taxes worldwide income no matter where a citizen lives, with the only way out being expatriation itself, which treats covered expatriates as having sold their entire portfolio, including crypto, the day before they give up their passport. Puerto Rico offers a 0% rate on island-source capital gains for bona fide residents, but this window is closing, applications filed from January 1, 2027 will carry a 4% rate on capital gains.
