Crypto Illicit Activity Hits Record High with $154 Billion Received
Illicit cryptocurrency addresses received at least $154 billion in 2025, according to recent findings. This marks a significant increase of 162% from the previous year and remains a lower-bound figure that may rise as more illicit addresses are identified.
The majority of this growth can be attributed to sanctioned entities, whose value received rose by 694%. Illicit activity still accounts for less than 1% of attributed cryptocurrency transaction volume, but highlights the need for continuous monitoring and stronger compliance controls.
Stablecoins played a significant role in the expansion, with $28 trillion in adjusted economic volume processed in 2025. This figure has grown sharply since 2023, reflecting an annualized growth rate of 133%. If current trends continue, payment volumes could intersect with off-chain transaction volumes of Visa and Mastercard between 2031 and 2039.
Crypto theft exceeded $3.4 billion through early December 2025, with the February Bybit breach accounting for about $1.5 billion. Chainalysis introduced blockchain intelligence agents on March 31, 2026, designed to support investigations and compliance analysis. The agents are built around data quality, auditable results, deterministic workflows, and human control.
