Crypto Industry Blames Trump's Meme Coin for CLARITY Act Failure
The failure of the CLARITY Act in the Senate has left the cryptocurrency industry reeling. Industry leaders are pointing fingers at President Donald Trump's deep financial ties to crypto, arguing that his personal interests complicated the legislative process.
According to a Bloomberg report, Trump generated $1.4 billion in income from crypto ventures last year. Justin Slaughter, senior adviser to Paradigm, said 'The failure of Clarity begins and ends with Donald Trump,' specifically citing Trump's meme coin launch shortly before his inauguration.
Other industry leaders, such as Castle Island Ventures partner Nic Carter, have also criticized the president for intertwining himself and his family with crypto. However, some, like Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, are blaming Democrats for the bill's failure, saying 'This one stings,' and that consumers and U.S. competitiveness lost out.
The White House rejected this characterization, accusing Democrats of putting politics ahead of U.S. technology and innovation. The CLARITY Act aimed to address market structure and improve consumer protection, but its failure has left the industry searching for answers.
