The cryptocurrency industry is facing a growing threat: violent robberies targeting digital asset holders. Tan Poh Hwee, president of the Asia Academy of Digital Economics, argues that the sector must do more to protect users from physical coercion. While cryptocurrencies offer financial freedom, they also make owners prime targets for criminals who use threats or violence to steal assets. The rise of "wrench attacks", where individuals are forced to transfer cryptocurrency under duress, highlights this vulnerability.
Current security measures, such as hack-proof wallets, do little to address the human factor. When a single person controls substantial wealth, they and their families become vulnerable to criminal coercion. The industry must take responsibility for designing products that account for these risks, rather than leaving physical safety as a personal matter.
Tan Poh Hwee emphasizes that treating digital and physical security separately is inadequate. The cryptocurrency industry must prioritize comprehensive solutions that protect both assets and their holders from violent crime.
