Crypto Industry Seeks AI Access Amid Growing Hacking Threat
Hacking problems driven by AI are growing day by day, according to industry insiders. The cryptocurrency sector is now urging top AI companies to open up their latest models to developers and security personnel responsible for open-source financial infrastructure.
The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) recently released an open letter calling on AI labs to create or expand access programs for those defending digital assets, including Bitcoin Core developers. The letter was signed by several prominent organizations in the space, including Africa Bitcoin Institute, Anchorage Digital, BitGo, and Kraken.
The industry is concerned that advanced AI models can scan large code repositories to find potential vulnerabilities and carry out complex tasks quickly, which can be used for both defense and attack. Hack-related losses have been growing, with DefiLlama data showing that hacking losses at cryptocurrency platforms in April 2026 exceeded $634 million.
The signatories of the letter stressed that open-source software underpins key digital and financial infrastructure, and that vulnerabilities in it could put individuals' lifetime savings at risk. The industry is now waiting to see whether AI companies will broaden access to their models for security purposes.
