Crypto Industry's Clarity Act Crashes in Senate Vote
The long-awaited Clarity Act, championed by President Trump and the crypto industry, has suffered a significant defeat in the US Senate.
The bill aimed to establish a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency sector, which has grown exponentially in recent years. However, it faced strong opposition from Democrats, who were concerned about an ethics clause that would have allowed presidents and elected officials to profit from crypto ventures while in office.
The Clarity Act would have split oversight of the crypto sector between the SEC and CFTC, with the CFTC taking on a majority role. Critics argued this was an attempt by the industry to avoid heavy regulatory scrutiny. In contrast, crypto executives denied these claims, and Trump administration regulators defended their oversight.
The bill failed to clear a key procedural hurdle after only 49 senators voted in favor, far short of the required 60 votes. The crypto sector had been hoping to pass the Clarity Act sooner, having amassed tens of millions of dollars for the upcoming elections. However, this has not been enough to overcome disagreements that have plagued the bill for months.
