Crypto Industry's Washington Influence Wanes Amid Lame Duck Session
The crypto industry's influence in Washington has waned significantly since its peak. Last year, it spent over $100 million on campaign contributions and lobbying efforts, including a bid to unseat former Senate Banking Committee chair Sherrod Brown. The strategy seemed to be working, with the passage of the Genius Act, a stablecoin bill that had bipartisan support.
The Clarity Act, which aimed to clarify digital asset regulations, appeared next in line for approval. However, Senator Angela Alsobrooks explained at Puck's Power Breakfast that the bill ultimately died due to its complexity and lack of consensus among lawmakers. Alsobrooks believes that the bill can still pass during the lame duck session.
A Democratic Congress may not prioritize the Clarity Act, as it had initially been championed by Republicans. The industry's aggressive lobbying efforts may have backfired, making it harder for lawmakers to support the bill. Senator Alsobrooks' comments suggest that the crypto industry's influence in Washington is waning.
