Crypto Investing Evolves: From 'HODLing' to DeFi and Beyond
Crypto investment strategies have undergone significant changes since Bitcoin's early days. Initially, investors primarily focused on buying coins and holding private keys, betting on Bitcoin's scarcity and future adoption.
The arrival of Ethereum and other blockchain networks expanded the investment universe beyond Bitcoin. Smart contracts introduced programmable applications, allowing investors to gain exposure to decentralized apps and infrastructure. The 2017 ICO boom brought thousands of tokens onto the market.
However, failed projects and severe market corrections showed that diversification across cryptocurrencies doesn't automatically reduce risk when assets share similar market drivers. Decentralized finance (DeFi) introduced yield strategies, enabling investors to earn income through lending, borrowing, liquidity provision, and yield farming.
Staking also became a popular strategy, allowing holders of proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies to participate in network security while potentially earning rewards. But it comes with risks involving validators, token incentives, and protocol failures.
Crypto ETFs brought digital-asset exposure into traditional brokerage accounts. By 2026, US-listed products extended beyond Bitcoin, incorporating features such as staking and in-kind creations and redemptions.
