Crypto Investors Ditch Market Cap for Usage Metrics
Crypto investors are shifting their focus from market capitalization to usage and value capture, according to industry executives. This change is driven by the recognition that market cap can be a distorted indicator, influenced by factors such as low-float launches and supply mechanics.
Market capitalization measures circulating or fully diluted supply multiplied by price, which can lead to tokens being ranked high without corresponding user demand or fee generation. In contrast, usage metrics such as active developers, transaction counts, fee revenue, and staking participation are becoming increasingly important in investment decisions.
The distinction between retail traders and institutional investors is also notable. For retail traders, market cap remains a useful discovery shortcut, while for institutions and long-horizon funds, it is increasingly treated as a screen rather than a conclusion.
