Crypto Investors Get Picky About AI Hype, Focus on Fundamentals
The AI token market in crypto is undergoing a significant shift, with investors increasingly demanding more than just an AI narrative to justify their investments. According to Alice Liu, Head of Research at CoinMarketCap, this change signals that the market has finally started charging for the 'AI tag', which was previously freely available.
The data supports this claim. CoinMarketCap's AI & Big Data category spans about 945 tokens with a combined market capitalization of $18.5 billion, or roughly 0.7% of the $2.64 trillion crypto market. However, fewer than one in ten of these tokens clears both a $20 million market-cap threshold and $1 million in daily trading volume.
This creates a stark divide between having an AI label and attracting meaningful market participation. The strongest projects are increasingly separating themselves from the broader category. For instance, Venice AI's token nearly doubled over the past month to about $1.1 billion, while Bittensor's TAO gained 24% over 30 days and reached a $2.8 billion market cap.
The divergence is particularly notable because AI remains one of crypto's most active narratives. However, that attention is no longer translating into broad-based gains across the category. Instead, investors are now distinguishing between projects based on liquidity, adoption, and individual catalysts.
