Crypto Investors Underestimate Market Potential, Warns Bitwise's Matt Hougan
Bitwise's Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan warns that investors are underestimating the potential growth of the crypto market. In his August 18 weekly CIO memo, Hougan highlighted three mistakes investors are currently making.
Hougan argues that decentralized applications such as Uniswap, Aave, and Chainlink are being valued as if they are confined to the $2 trillion crypto market. However, he points out that these platforms could eventually serve markets orders of magnitude larger, including stocks, bonds, real estate, and other financial assets worth over $150 trillion.
Hougan also warns against assuming that TradFi giants will automatically dominate crypto-native businesses once they enter the market. He cites stablecoins as an example, noting that despite PayPal launching its own stablecoin in 2023, Tether and Circle still control around 88% of the market.
Finally, Hougan cautions against extrapolating future blockchain activity from today's transaction volumes. He argues that tokenized equities could eventually trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with AI agents continuously monitoring portfolios and executing trades without human intervention.
