SEC Proposes Framework for Crypto Assets, Sparking Calls for Further Action
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed new regulations for crypto assets, aiming to create a framework for certain investment contracts involving digital assets. The proposal, titled Regulation Crypto Assets, would allow issuers of up to $5 million in offerings over four years or up to $75 million annually without SEC registration.
Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, welcomed the move and called for further action on tokenized equity trading rules. He urged the SEC to release an Innovation Exemption, which could unlock on-chain trading of tokenized equities.
The proposal will enter a 60-day public comment period, during which time stakeholders can provide feedback. The SEC has stated that it supports congressional action on broader crypto legislation and will continue its work under existing authority.
