Crypto King Aiden Pleterski to Defend Himself in Toronto Fraud Trial
Aiden Pleterski, known as the 'Crypto King,' will defend himself against fraud and money-laundering charges in his Toronto trial starting October 5. The development marks a dramatic turn in a saga that has become a cautionary tale about risky investing and get-rich-quick promises.
Pleterski, 27, sought more time to find legal representation but was denied by Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru. This means Pleterski will represent himself, with Nakatsuru taking on an 'enhanced role' during the trial, including objecting on Pleterski's behalf to ensure only admissible evidence is presented.
The case arises from May 2024 charges laid by Durham Regional Police, who accused Pleterski of fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime in an alleged multimillion-dollar investment scheme. The charges come after years of financial and legal trouble, including a bankruptcy proceeding that recovered about $3 million for roughly 160 investors.
Nakatsuru assured Pleterski he would receive a fair trial, saying 'I want to assure you that even though this isn't your first choice, obviously, you will receive a fair trial. I want you to be very free in asking questions … don't hesitate, just get up on your feet and ask me.'
