Crypto King to Represent Himself in Toronto Trial on Fraud Charges
Aiden Pleterski, a 27-year-old self-described 'Crypto King,' will represent himself in his upcoming Toronto jury trial on fraud and money-laundering charges. The trial is set to begin on October 5. Pleterski had requested more time to find legal representation, but Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru denied the postponement.
The charges, laid by Durham Regional Police in May 2024, allege that Pleterski committed fraud over $5,000 and laundered the proceeds of crime in an alleged multimillion-dollar investment scheme. In the summer of 2022, some investors pushed Pleterski into bankruptcy as they tried to recover the $40 million they had given him to invest in cryptocurrency and foreign exchange.
The bankruptcy proceedings recovered about $3 million for roughly 160 investors. Pleterski's lawyer, Marco Sciarra, said that extended family members were prepared to liquidate assets so Pleterski could hire trial counsel, but the court was not given their names or details about those assets.
Nakatsuru will take on an 'enhanced role' during the trial, including objecting on Pleterski's behalf to ensure only admissible evidence is presented to the jury. Pleterski will be free to ask questions during the trial, and Nakatsuru assured him that he would receive a fair trial.
