Crypto King's Trial Takes a Dramatic Turn as He Goes Solo Against the Jury
Aiden Pleterski, known as the 'Crypto King' of Canada, will face a Toronto jury without a defense lawyer. He is accused of defrauding investors and laundering money on a massive scale.
Pleterski allegedly convinced investors to trust him with over $40 million Canadian dollars in 2021 and 2022. This was done under the guise of substantial profits from crypto and currency trading, according to prosecutors.
The Ontario Superior Court refused Pleterski's request for a trial postponement to hire more time to find a lawyer. As a result, he will have to defend himself before the jury starting October 5. Judge Shaun Nakatsuru will play an enhanced role during the hearings to prevent inadmissible elements from being presented.
The case against Pleterski is part of Canada's growing efforts to crack down on crypto-related fraud. In March, a coordinated operation involving the US, UK, and Canada targeted crypto scams.
