Crypto Legislation Threatens Utah's Agricultural Economy

Share

Utah's agricultural industry is facing a potential crisis due to cryptocurrency legislation that could divert financial capital away from local banks and into digital accounts. Representative Scott Chew, a rancher and state representative for House District 68, warns that if the 'CLARITY Act' passes Congress in its current form, it will leave community banks with reduced lending capacity.

Utah agriculture provides over $2.3 billion in sales and employs over 16,000 people, making it a crucial pillar of the state's economy. However, input costs are rising, and farmers rely on credit from local banks to finance their operations. The CLARITY Act could reduce lending capacity by allowing stablecoin issuers to indirectly pay interest, attracting deposits away from traditional banks.

The difference between stablecoin and bank deposits is crucial. Local banks take deposits and use them to make loans to small businesses, farmers, and ranchers. If stablecoin issuers are allowed to act like banks, they will not make these loans, leaving a key source of credit for rural communities dry.

The stakes are high: projections suggest that $1.3 trillion in deposits and $850 billion in lending capacity are at risk nationally if the loophole is not closed. Representative Scott Chew urges lawmakers to close the stablecoin loophole, warning that allowing it to remain would 'rob Utah farmers of important credit lines' and line the pockets of the crypto industry.
