A year after the crypto market's dramatic crash, leveraged trading hasn't fully recovered its former intensity. However, the demand for high-risk bets hasn't faded. Instead, the infrastructure that once fueled crypto speculation is now being redirected toward traditional assets like stocks and commodities.
Data from Talos highlights this shift. Across five major trading platforms, the total open interest in perpetual futures, a measure of active speculative positions, has dropped from $81 billion to about $67 billion over the past year. Notably, open interest in contracts linked to real-world assets has surged from nearly zero to $9 billion, now accounting for 14% of the total across these venues.
This trend suggests that traders are expanding their leveraged strategies beyond digital tokens, seeking new opportunities in more conventional markets. The machinery that once powered crypto's speculative frenzy is now being repurposed, reflecting the adaptability of trading strategies in response to market conditions.
