Crypto Loses Two Key Advocates in Hester Peirce and Summer Mersinger Departure
Washington's crypto landscape is undergoing significant changes as two key figures are set to leave their posts. SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce and Blockchain Association CEO Summer Mersinger announced their departures, with Peirce's last day being October 2 and Mersinger stepping down on October 16.
Peirce has been a prominent advocate for crypto regulation, leading the SEC's Crypto Task Force since 2018. Her departure will leave the agency with only two commissioners: Chairman Paul Atkins and Mark Uyeda.
Mersinger, a former CFTC commissioner, had taken over as CEO of the Blockchain Association in June 2025. Despite her brief tenure, she led the group's efforts on the GENIUS Act and regulatory progress such as the joint SEC-CFTC interpretation that most crypto assets are not securities in themselves.
The departures come at a critical time for the industry, with the Clarity Act stalled in the Senate. Mersinger had been working closely with Peirce to advance the bill, which would have provided much-needed clarity on market structure for crypto companies.
