Crypto Losses Soar to Record $767M in September Hacks

Share

The crypto space suffered its worst month in terms of security incidents in September 2026, according to verified data sources. Cryptocurrency platforms and users lost approximately $767 million to hacks, exploits, and phishing attacks during this period.

Data from two blockchain security firms, CertiK and PeckShield, reveal that the majority of losses were due to two major incidents. The BitGet platform was hit with a hot wallet attack on September 24, resulting in $387.5 million in losses. Another significant exploit occurred on Blockstream's Liquid Network, worth around $318.7 million.

CertiK reported that about $270.6 million of the total losses were recovered or frozen, leaving approximately $495.8 million unrecovered. This September surge highlights the growing vulnerability of crypto assets to various types of attacks, including smart-contract vulnerabilities and wallet infrastructure weaknesses.
