Crypto Market Capitalization Dives 50%, But Real Activity Falls Just 1.6%
Global cryptocurrency market capitalization plummeted by about 50% over the past year, but actual crypto economic activity declined only modestly. According to Chainalysis' seventh annual report, global cryptocurrency economic activity totaled $9.4 trillion in the 12 months ended June 30, down just 1.6% from $9.5 trillion a year earlier.
The report highlighted some surprising trends. Despite the market downturn, stablecoin balances remained relatively steady, holding between $98 billion and $109 billion over the same period. Cross-border stablecoin transactions, however, rose by 77.5% to $220.3 billion, driven in part by everyday demand for goods, remittances, and asset preservation.
Brazil took the top spot on the global cryptocurrency adoption index, with a crypto economy estimated at $252.5 billion, followed closely by the US, Nigeria, Japan, and South Korea. Latin America's crypto economy grew 9.8% to $593.8 billion, with trading activity in countries like Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela experiencing growth.
