Crypto Market Crashes 1.6% as War Fears, Blockchain Halts, Tether Freeze, and ETF Outflows Combine
The global crypto market has experienced a significant drop of 1.6% in just 24 hours, with a daily trading volume of $83.7 billion according to CoinGecko.
The decline is attributed to four major events that occurred within the same 48-hour window:
Firstly, US-Iran military strikes near the Strait of Hormuz have caused oil prices to surge towards $95 a barrel, leading to a sell-off in risk assets including cryptocurrency. President Trump confirmed the strikes and warned Iran against retaliating.
Secondly, two Layer-1 blockchains, Ontology and Injective, halted their operations due to suspected malicious activity. Ontology paused its mainnet as a precaution on August 31, while Injective stopped producing blocks for approximately three hours before resuming without a rollback.
Thirdly, a $42.4 million Tether freeze has raised questions about the stability of the stablecoin. The freeze is tied to a North Carolina pig-butchering fraud case where Homeland Security Investigations in Raleigh opened an inquiry after a victim reported a fake trading platform.
Lastly, Bitcoin ETF outflows have added pressure on the market, with -$236.46 million recorded as of September 1.
