Crypto Market Logs 2% Gain as Bitcoin Surges Past $82,200
The crypto market ended its first week of September on a strong note, defying mid-week volatility to log a 2% weekly gain. The aggregate capitalization rose from just above $2.71 trillion to a peak of over $2.82 trillion, with Bitcoin leading the charge.
The top cryptocurrency surged past $82,200 on Thursday, its highest level in more than three months, before pulling back and eventually closing the week 1.2% higher at $1.6 trillion market capitalization. While this performance was modest, altcoins showed more vigor, with several posting gains of over 40%, including Zcash.
Zcash (ZEC) made the biggest splash, jumping nearly 40% after breaching $1,200 for the first time since late 2016. This propelled it back into the top digital assets by market capitalization, displacing HYPE to secure the ninth spot. Other notable gainers included BNB and XMR, both of which rose by over 7%, as well as ADA.
The aggregate market for altcoins ended the week 2.2% higher, with its total value rising from $1.15 trillion to $1.17 trillion. This growth was largely driven by a combination of price increases and market capitalization expansions among several leading altcoins.
