Crypto Market Sees Record-Breaking Project Closures Amid Industry Shift
The cryptocurrency industry has been marked by cyclical booms and busts. However, recent trends suggest that the market is experiencing a significant wave of project closures.
A '2026 Compilation of Dead Projects in the Crypto Industry' released by RootData has sparked discussions about the fate of various projects. The compilation lists 124 dead projects as of now, but it's expected that this number will increase significantly by the end of the year, potentially creating a record for the most project closures in history.
RootData uses a standardized determination system based on automated tracking and manual verification to identify dead projects. Three major death determination criteria are used: official announcements, inactivity for over six months, and inaccessible or canceled official websites and social media accounts.
The industry has been abuzz with discussions about the implications of these closures. Some analysts believe that the market is experiencing a 'net decline' state, where new projects entering the market fail to compensate for old ones exiting. This trend is attributed to the increasing presence of crypto giants, mergers and acquisitions, and the entry of internet and financial giants.
